Money From Lobbyists… And Their Clients
We’ve only just launched the site and already there’s more news coming out of John McCain’s deep ties to Washington lobbyists. In a story for the Wall Street Journal, T.W. Farnam reports that, in the first half of 2008, House, Senate and presidential campaigns received $140 million from lobbyists.
The story notes that John McCain took in $1.7 million from lobbyists. That may not seem like much, but here’s the thing: direct contributions from lobbyists, while certainly not good, aren’t the problem. But contributions from their clients? There’s the real story.
According to a Campaign Money Watch analysis of data available from the Center for Responsive Politics, McCain has received more than $10.3 million from clients of his lobbyist bundlers and staff members.
What can $10.3 million buy these days? In a McCain administration, probably quite a bit.
